Carter Mudgett

When I started college in 2020, I hardly read the news, much less wrote an article. Originally declared as an English major, I swapped to communication after joining Spinnaker Media, the University of North Florida’s independent student-run news organization. Climbing the leadership ladder, I quickly became editor-in-chief and led for over two years.

For the first four months of 2024, I completed an internship with WJCT News 89.9 and Jacksonville Today for the first four months of 2024. There, I covered news for the audio and written worlds. On the side, I am actively seeking freelance opportunities. My work has been published with the Jacksonville Business Journal and Out South Florida.

After four years, I went from being the newbie who didn’t know how to spell “lede,” to training new journalists about how to care about the world they’ll spend so much time writing about. Today, I live and breathe the news. If I could, I’d probably eat it too. During this time, I’ve told the stories of those who want to be heard, those who don’t know their stories are worth telling, and those who don’t want their stories being told.
